Soapstone is located in the North Georgia Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests and began as a mountain retreat for the Marcus W. Sr. and Pat Buttrill family. After several trips through the Towns County area, they came to a beautiful mountain with farm land, creek, pond and a water wheel, and became the owners in August 1969. For many years the Buttrill family enjoyed the mountain, vegetable garden, greenhouse full of camellias, farmland, fishing and playing in the creek. Then Soapstone Creek Circle was planned and also the beginning of the Soapstone Community. The Holly Hut and A frame homes were the first built. The Buttrill family shared the property with friends and church groups for weekend retreats and activities. From the early days Soapstone has been a gated community with home/lot owners and 13 acres of common area including a pond, trout filed creek (Soapstone Creek) beach, pasture, picnic area and community building called the train station. To this day the loving family atmosphere continues throughout our Beautiful Mountain Retreat.
